Did you know?

Did you know that PE and Health classes are NOT required in middle school at all? Yes, they have to be offered, but students are not required to either class before "graduating" into high school? Do you see a problem here? I also just received an email stating the "DoDEA has restricted all middle schoolers from participating in sports".

Wait did I read that right, I had to reread that email several times to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me. That's what it said... so while childhood obesity is on the rise in our country we are going to take away participation in middle school sports because (and I quote!) ...

"Middle school students often lack the physical development, maturity and judgement of older students."

I would love to hear your opinions on this... do find this a valid reason? Does it make sense to you? Chime in... I need to hear from you!

Personally, I think taking away PE is one of the WORST things we could do to our children. Kids have to be physical and exercise every day. It releases certain chemicals and such in their brains that help them learn better. I know that the days that I walk with my children to school they have a much better day at school. They are able to focus better and learn more.

However, with that being said, it is not the govt' responsibilty to teach our kids how to eat right and exercise. It is modeled at home. The best way to teach healthy eatting is to eat healthy in front of our children and make them healthy meals. Install exercise through bike rides and walks in the evening as a family. The problem is a lot of parents depend on the schools to supply their children with this knowledge. I am not saying that is what you are doing at all! ;-) I know you are a good Momma, but some are not as concerned and active in their children's life and that is alarming. Do you know that Mrs. Obama wants to pass laws that basically influence if not control the way we as Americans eat? She wants to put a govt' agent in every school cafeteria to make sure the kids are eatting FDA approved meals! I did not know that when Americans voted him in they also gave her the rights to make laws like he did. Sorry....my own little rant. Did I chase enough rabbits in this for ya? LOL!

I agree with Scrappy. Schools should offer the classes and require them for all students K-12.Many parents don't know or want to learn how to feed and keep their children active. So much easier to turn on the TV or computer to keep them out of their way and tell them to go eat what you want when you want.I dont believe gym classes should be all about team sports, there are so many individual activities children should be exposed to for them to learn what they like and could be a life time active adventure. This from a former gym teacher.
